A band in different keys: one setlist, everyone's chart

How a band plays one song in different keys: the band's key for a set, your own key on your chart. Try it on a guitar and ukulele duo.

A band plays one song, but not everyone reads it in the same key. The singer wants it lower, the guitarist plays with a capo, the keyboard player keeps the chords they know. In Fretlist that is normal: one song, and everyone's chart in the key that suits them.

It is also where Fretlist started. For years I played in a duo with my buddy Ruud. On some songs he played the ukulele, while I was steadily rocking my nylon-string guitar, tuned a half step down. So our keys differed. Fretlist handles that out of the box: the song is stored the way it was written, on my guitar, and every other chart is worked out from it.

The band's key for a set

On a setlist, click a song's key badge and step it to the key you play tonight. The whole band reads it in that key, in this setlist only. Leaders and members can change it.

Fretlist for Bands is open by request until 1 November. Leave your email and I'll set your band up.

Your own key wins

The + and - on a song are yours. Press them and only your chart moves, while the band keeps its key. A badge like Transpose -2 shows how far you are from the band, and a purple dot marks your key on the setlist. When the band moves the song, your chart stays put. Reset takes you back to the band's key.

Here is one of my own songs, Read Between the Lines, the way we played it. Click Ruud on the Band panel and the chart flips to his ukulele:

Read Between the Lines in a band workspace, as Dear John and Ruud read it. Click a name on the Band panel and the chart shows that player's chords: guitar tuned a half step down, or ukulele. Each keeps their own transpose and capo.

It's in every new Fretlist library, so you can open it yourself.

A capo is yours too: pick one and your chart shows the shapes you play, while the song keeps its key. The band workspace guide has the details.

Two steps, both free. Create your account before 1 November to lock in Early Access. Then request access for Bands and I'll set your band up.
