Changelog

New features and improvements to Fretlist.

September 17, 2026v3.8.0

Fretlist knows what you play

Tell Fretlist your instruments and their tunings, and the app stops assuming guitar. Chord diagrams are drawn for the instrument a song is written for, and a new song starts on your main instrument, in its tuning. Add a ukulele, a mandolin, or type in something it has never heard of. Read the instruments guide

  • Tell Fretlist which instruments you play, and in which tuning.
  • Chord diagrams are drawn for the instrument a song is written for.
  • New songs start on your main instrument, in its tuning.
  • Type in an instrument Fretlist does not know, strings and all.
  • Move sets up and down inside a setlist.
  • Open a song from a setlist and it shows that set's key, marked as changed.
  • The same song in two sets now opens in the key of the set you tapped.
  • Play Mode's song list shows the key each song is played in.
  • Offline: the app notices it has lost connection more reliably.
  • Fixed: the library showed as empty right after this update until the app had re-synced. Nothing was lost.

September 16, 2026v3.7.8

  • A chord grid now breaks into the same measures per line in Play Mode as in the song.
  • Your transpose and capo changes sync again if you have ever deleted a song.

September 16, 2026v3.7.7

  • A Fretlist Backup now includes your folders. Restore it and every song goes back where it was.
  • The restore screen says how many folders it will bring back.

September 13, 2026v3.7.6

  • LibreOffice files (.odt) import now, alongside Word files.
  • A file Fretlist cannot read is listed by name with the reason, instead of vanishing.
  • When nothing could be read, the import says so, rather than "already in your library".
  • Lyrics-only sheets from Word keep their first lines. The opening verse used to be dropped.

September 10, 2026v3.7.5

  • A web address in a song is now a link. Tap it and it opens in a new tab.
  • Keep the backing track or the tutorial in the song itself, where you need it.
  • A link in a setlist description is tappable too, on your page and on a shared one.
  • Links stay plain in Play Mode, so a tap on stage never opens a browser.
  • The Ultimate Guitar converter no longer mangles a song, or returns an empty one.
  • Both free converter tools have a proper page now, with real before and after examples.

September 1, 2026v3.7.4

  • You can paste onto an empty line in the editor again, right-click and all.
  • This page can fold down to the major releases, for a quick catch-up.
  • The update prompt waits while an editor is open, so a reload can't take your draft.
  • A bar written as [|] above the lyrics lands in the chord row, not in the words.
  • Bars stand upright there. Directions like walkdown keep their italics.
  • Reopening the app goes straight to your song, without the dashboard flashing first.
Show all 11 changes
  • When a chord grid wraps, the strums stay under the chords they belong to.
  • A word in a grid stays a word, instead of offering to become a chord.
  • Word exports read better: bolder text, blacker tabs, roomier headings.
  • Chords now sit over the same syllable in an export as they do on screen.
  • On a shared song, hiding chords or tabs now carries into Play Mode.

August 31, 2026v3.7.3

  • A new account opens on a song now, instead of an empty-looking dashboard.
  • Amazing Grace opens with a chord grid, so a new chart shows what one can hold.
  • The demo song card links straight to the editor and to the importer.
  • The browser tab keeps the song's name instead of flipping back to “Song”.
  • The help card on the dashboard points at the docs, not only at my inbox.
  • Signing out clears the device properly, so the next account starts clean.
  • Enter moves you on from the first setup step, no reaching for the mouse.

August 30, 2026v3.7.2

  • Big releases now open with a summary and a link to the guide that covers them.
  • Long releases show the main changes first, with the rest one click away.
  • On a phone, the first tap into the editor puts the caret where you tapped.

August 29, 2026v3.7.1

  • The update prompt is a single line now, with a Not now button beside Update.
  • It links to the changelog, so you can see what changed before you reload.
  • Dismissing the update prompt now sticks, instead of it returning moments later.

August 28, 2026v3.7.0

A big update for the song editor

The editor now colors your chord sheet as you type, writes the brackets and braces for you, and moves through a chord definition or a grid with Tab. On a phone it scrolls like any other page. Read the song editor guide

  • The song editor now colors your chord sheet as you write it.
  • On a computer, a row of Section and Directive buttons writes the brackets and braces for you.
  • On a computer, typing / at the start of a line inserts a section or directive from the keyboard.
  • Tab moves through a chord definition's fields, and through a grid's cells.
  • The editor capitalizes sentences as you type.
  • On a chord line, typing [ beside a chord wraps it instead of opening an empty pair.
Show all 21 changes
  • Expand hides the title and details rows and gives the space to your lyrics.
  • Expanded, the title, artist and details fold into one line. Click it to bring the rows back.
  • Press F in an editor to fold the sidebar away, and again to bring it back.
  • A heading written as "Verse:" stays that way when you save.
  • Section headings written as "= Chorus" are recognized in the editor.
  • Switching between the two editor modes leaves the lines you did not touch alone.
  • A repeated chorus now works in Chords over Lyrics.
  • Bracketed notes like [x4] read as notes now, instead of being colored as chords.
  • A chord you define now goes to the top of the song, wherever you wrote it.
  • Chords you only play in a grid now get a chord chart too.
  • Custom chord voicings come along when you export a song.
  • On a phone the editor scrolls like any other page, and the keyboard slides over it.
  • The Song Details bar tucks away as you scroll down and comes back as you scroll up.
  • Tapping into the lyrics on a phone puts the details away until you are done writing.
  • On a phone, tapping the song name drops a panel from the topbar instead of opening a dialog.

August 27, 2026v3.6.2

  • The update prompt never appears over Play Mode. It waits until you're off stage.
  • The update prompt has a close button, and stays closed once you dismiss it.
  • Fretlist checks for updates far less often when left open, saving battery and data.
  • Grid row labels and side notes now work in ChordPro grids too, written as <- and >-.
  • A note written under the last grid row now attaches to it, instead of sitting loose below.
  • A stray letter in a strum row reads as plain text now, not as a chord you can tap to define.
Show all 12 changes
  • Grid shapes now accept the full ChordPro form, so 4x4 and 16 work as well as 1+4x4+1.
  • The left and right numbers in a grid shape now set how much room row labels get.
  • Leave the shape off a later grid and it reuses the one before it.
  • Baritone ukulele now gets its own DGBE chord shapes instead of soprano ones.
  • The key badge no longer transposes a baritone ukulele song by a fourth.
  • Chord grid blocks have square corners, so repeat bars read as bar lines.

August 20, 2026v3.6.1

  • Saving a setlist no longer hangs on "Saving" when the connection stalls; it tells you and keeps your setlist safe.
  • Chord grids with no set size now fit their content and span the row, instead of bunching into the left of a wide grid.
  • Songs no longer hang on a loading skeleton when opened offline.
  • Tapping a song offline now opens it, even right after an app update.
  • The update prompt reloads straight away and only asks once.
  • Chord grids wrap to two measures per line on a phone, and fill the row in landscape.
Show all 18 changes
  • Grids with no row labels no longer reserve an empty column on the left.
  • Grid row labels and notes like "repeat" now survive the switch to Chords over Lyrics.
  • Switching editor views keeps everything: blank lines, tab blocks, comments and chord spacing.
  • Verse, Chorus and Bridge headings become real ChordPro sections, so {chorus} repeats work.
  • The editor remembers which view you write in, and songs are stored as ChordPro.
  • The free ChordPro converters now write proper section directives.
  • Chord grids written with beat slots now convert to the compact [Grid] form.
  • Jazz grid bar lines convert too: row-opening double bars and mid-row repeats.
  • Two chords on the same beat no longer shift when you switch editor views.
  • A grid with row labels keeps its label column instead of stacking early.
  • Section headings sit a little further from the block above them.
  • "= Chorus" now works as a section heading, the way chordsheet.com writes it.

August 19, 2026v3.6.0

Show and hide any part of a song

Lyrics, chords, grids and tabs each turn on and off on their own, so you can read a chords-only chart without touching the song itself. Read the show and hide guide

  • Show and hide each part of a song on its own: lyrics, chords, grids, and tabs.
  • Hide the lyrics for a chords-and-grids only view, handy if you read charts, not words.
  • Grids now show and hide on their own, separate from the chords.
  • A song sheet can never go blank: Hide all leaves the lyrics.
  • Fixed grids printing two bars per line instead of the full row.
  • Editing a song now moves it to the top of Recently Edited on the dashboard.
  • Demos you're working on now show in Recently Edited, keeping their demo flag.
  • Editing an onboarding sample song adds it to your library as a real song.

August 18, 2026v3.5.0

Chord grids

Chart a song as bars and chords with no lyrics, for intros, turnarounds and instrumentals. Split bars, repeats, endings, simile marks and strum patterns all render, and grids transpose with the rest of the song. Read the chord grids guide

  • Chord grids: chart a song as bars and chords, with no lyrics, for intros, turnarounds, and instrumentals.
  • Write a grid the simple way in Chords over Lyrics, where a space separates each bar, or with the full ChordPro grid directives.
  • Split bars, repeats, first and second endings, simile marks, and strum patterns all render.
  • Pick a Flat or Blocks look for your grids under Appearance settings.
  • Grids transpose with the rest of the song and read big in Play Mode.
  • Chord grids have their own guide. Read it

August 2, 2026v3.4.23

  • Lyrics no longer pick up an extra space under longer chord names.
  • Two identical lines now line up identically, whatever chords sit above them.
  • Two chord names typed with no space between them now read as two chords, not as a lyric.
  • Chord names no longer run together when you switch to Chords over Lyrics.

August 1, 2026v3.4.22

  • Fixed a song opening under another song's title, with the wrong chord sheet, after a weak connection served an offline page.
  • The sidebar no longer highlights two songs at once, or opens two menus from one long press.
  • Move to now appears before you have any folders, so you can make your first one from the song menu or the editor.
  • Folder menus now say Rename folder and Delete folder, so Delete can't read as deleting the songs.
  • Your font and chord color now apply straight away, instead of sometimes needing a re-pick.
  • Light and dark mode moved into Appearance settings, next to the font and color controls.

July 27, 2026v3.4.21

  • The song editor now keeps a local draft as you type, so a reload can't take your lyrics and chords.
  • Reopening the editor puts your unsaved version back and tells you that's what you're looking at.
  • Background syncs and cross-device updates no longer refresh the page while you're editing.
  • Reopening the app and tapping straight into New Song no longer bounces you back to the dashboard.
  • A save that stalls on a weak connection now tells you, instead of sitting on "Saving" forever.
  • Switching apps while editing brings you back with the cursor where you left it.
  • The Edit button no longer gets stuck spinning when a request stalls.

July 25, 2026v3.4.20

  • Play Mode auto-scroll now rests the last line the same distance above the bottom on every device, so phone, tablet, and landscape all behave consistently.

July 24, 2026v3.4.19

  • An instruction written after a tab line (like "x4, only play one 0 on repeats") now wraps as normal text on narrow screens instead of leaving big blank gaps.
  • Tab lines in alternate tunings now render correctly. A string labeled F (or any note, including sharps and flats) is read as a tab string, not turned into an F chord.

July 21, 2026v3.4.17

  • Play Mode auto-scroll now settles the last line in the lower part of the screen instead of the middle, so the end of a song no longer floats up with a big empty gap beneath it.

July 16, 2026v3.4.16

  • OnSong backup imports now pull your chord sheets out of PDF and Word attachments across both OnSong backup formats, instead of creating blank songs.
  • Sheets that are only a scan or photo are skipped cleanly and reported, never imported as an empty song.
  • Repeat markers like (2x) on a chord line now render fully styled, instead of leaving a stray white bracket.

July 15, 2026v3.4.15

  • Songs JSON export now has a copy-able link you can fetch from a script or command line.

July 8, 2026v3.4.13

  • Fixed the New Song editor ignoring taps on phone when opened from the menu.
  • Chords like Aomit5, A(no5) and Eomit5/G# now highlight in your sheet and map to your custom voicing.

July 6, 2026v3.4.12

  • Play Mode now downloads your whole set the moment you open it, so no song is missing when the WiFi drops.
  • Opening the app offline now shows the page you asked for, not the last page you had open.
  • Songs whose chords went missing from a device's offline copy now restore themselves on the next visit.
  • Songs without chords yet now show that offline too, no more endless loading for an empty song.

July 5, 2026v3.4.11

  • Exported PDFs now show the correct page numbers (no more "Page 1 / 0").
  • Setlist notes now appear when you print or export a setlist (PDF, Word, text).
  • Setlist notes now keep the line breaks you typed instead of running together.

  • Monospace song titles now render consistently in Safari and Chrome.

June 19, 2026v3.4.7

  • Import a shared setlist and its songs into your library (songs you already have are reused).
  • Play Mode: open a song from a setlist and move through the whole set by swipe, arrows, or a foot pedal.
  • Play Mode: an end-of-song pill cues the next song, tap to advance or set it to auto-advance.

  • New help guides: performing with Play Mode, and sharing songs and setlists.

  • Email a setlist as its running order, and share setlists from the sidebar too.
  • Share dialogs can also create a public link and, for setlists, share the individual songs.
  • Song "Written" date: pick a month and year, or an exact day, going back 100 years.
  • Setlist event dates now go back 10 years.

June 11, 2026v3.4.1

  • Shared songs and setlists now open the same Print preview as the app, with Save as PDF.
  • Setlists print cleaner: a set that fits stays on one page instead of splitting across the break.

June 9, 2026v3.4.0

Print and export, rebuilt

A live page preview, then Print or Save as PDF. Choose paper size, orientation, up to three columns, text size and high contrast, and the printout matches what you see: transpose, capo, chord color and anything you have hidden. Read the print and export guide

  • New Print & Export window for songs: a live page preview, then Print or Save as PDF.
  • Pick paper size, portrait or landscape, 1 to 3 columns, text size, and high contrast.
  • The printout matches your view: transpose, capo, chord color, and hidden chords or tabs.
  • Export to ChordPro, Word, or plain text from the same window, with your transpose applied.
  • Song duration is easier to enter on mobile: just type the digits and the m:ss colon appears for you.

  • More chord colors: Coral, Pink, Purple, and Turquoise, with a sharper key badge.

  • Pick a chord and key color (or turn it off), with a live preview in Settings.

May 29, 2026v3.3.1

May 21, 2026v3.2.0

  • Set a password during onboarding (optional). Useful for accounts created via Google or magic link.
  • Install prompt step now lists three reasons to add Fretlist to your home screen, including offline access.

  • More blank line fixes when pasting from Ultimate Guitar on Firefox on Windows

May 8, 2026v3.0.0

Frets: chord diagrams for every song

Define the shapes a song uses and they render as diagrams above the chart. Guitar and ukulele ship with a full library, diagrams follow your capo, and you can tap any chord to pick a different voicing. Read the Frets guide

  • Frets — visual chord diagrams for every song. Add a [Chords] block to define the shapes used in a song; they render as a row of fingering grids above the lyrics.
  • Guitar and ukulele ship with a full built-in library. Mandolin and banjo are supported too — add your own voicings with [Chords:mandolin] or [Chords:banjo].
  • Capo-aware diagrams: set a capo and every shape shifts to show what you actually finger on the neck.
  • Three display modes — Frets (grid diagrams), Text (chord names + notation), or Hidden. Your choice is saved per device.
  • Tap any chord card to pick a different voicing. In Song View the change is just for you (like setting a transpose); in Edit View it saves to the song for everyone.
  • Voicing editor with live SVG preview as you type notation, a scrollable library carousel, and a shape-preserving barre-slide fallback on transpose.

  • Cards with a personal voicing show a small purple dot so you always know which shapes you've adjusted.
  • Chord hover previews — hover over any chord name in the lyrics and a mini diagram pops up.
