Tagging songs

Give a song as many tags as you like, such as acoustic, worship or learning, then filter and search your library by them. Rename or delete a tag across every song at once.

A tag is a short label on a song: "acoustic", "worship", "learning", "christmas". A song sits in one folder at most, but it can carry as many tags as you like, so tags are the way to cut across folders. Your folders might be per project, while your tags say which songs are acoustic, which you are still learning, and which work for a wedding.

Adding tags to a song

Open the song in the editor and tap its title in the top bar. The panel that opens holds the Title, the Artist, the folder button and the tag button. When a song has no artist, folder or tags yet, the line under the title says Add artist, folder or tags.

Tap the tag button. A small menu opens with a search field, Find or create a tag, and the tags your library already uses, each with how many songs carry it. The song's own tags are listed first.

  • Tap a tag to put it on the song, and tap it again to take it off. A tag on the song has a check mark.
  • To make a new tag, type its name and choose Create. Fretlist offers that only when no tag of that name exists yet, so you don't end up with "Acoustic" and "acoustic" side by side.
  • On a computer, the arrow keys move through the list and Enter ticks the tag, or creates it.

Once the song has tags, the tag button shows how many. Tags are part of the song, so press Save to keep them, like any other change in the editor.

Tag names are stored in lowercase. A song can carry up to 30 tags, and a tag name can be up to 40 characters long.

Seeing a song's tags

Open the ... menu on a song, in the sidebar or on the song itself, and choose Tags. It lists the song's tags. This list is for reading only: tags are changed in the editor.

Filtering by a tag

Above the song list, open Filter and choose Tags. Pick a tag to see only the songs that carry it. The filter button then reads "Tag:" with the tag's name. Choose Clear tag filter to see every song again.

A tag filter replaces any other filter or key filter you had on, so the list shows exactly the songs with that tag.

When you are adding songs to a setlist, the Add songs picker has its own tag button next to the folder button, so you can pick from your acoustic songs, say, while you build the set.

Searching by a tag

The search above the song list also finds tags. Type part of a tag and every song carrying it shows up, with the tag next to the title in a small badge with a tag icon. The same search works in the Add songs picker and in Play Mode's song list.

Renaming or deleting a tag

A tag can be renamed or deleted for every song at once. Open Filter, choose Tags, then right-click a tag on a computer, or press and hold it on a phone or tablet. Choose Rename tag or Delete tag.

  • Rename tag turns the row into a text field on a computer: type the new name and press Enter. On a phone or tablet a small dialog asks for the name. Renaming a tag to the name of a tag you already have merges the two into one.
  • Delete tag asks first, for example "Delete "acoustic"? The tag comes off 14 songs. The songs stay." The songs themselves are never deleted.

Only people who can edit the library see these options. In a band, that leaves out Viewers and Guests.

Tags in a band

In a band workspace, tags belong to the band's library: everyone in the band sees the same tags, and a tag one member adds shows up for the others too. Your personal library has its own tags.

Your old Demo label

Fretlist used to have a Demo label for songs. A song you marked Demo now carries the tag demo instead, so you can filter and search for it like any other tag. The starter songs Fretlist adds to a new account still show their own demo mark until you edit them.

Tags elsewhere in Fretlist

  • Version history: adding or removing a tag is saved as a version of the song, so you can see when it changed. Restoring an older version brings back the words and music, and leaves the tags as they are. See Version history.
  • Backups: a Fretlist backup carries every song's tags, and restoring the backup puts them back.
